My burden

Tho' blows may bear towards
those I love,
striving to drive
to a path of pain and loss,
I can bear the bludgeons instead,
and watch their lives
unfold to untold joys and hopes,
tho' I must bear the pain and loss.

But there is no sappiness here:
just the glow of knowing I have spared
others a needless loss,
against which mine
is the lesser loss.
